HSTS, (Home-Start Trafford & Salford) are pleased to announce that they have been awarded £346,243 from The Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund for a 5 year STEPS project (Salford and Trafford Early-years Parenting Support), starting October 2013.

We have worked hard to put the bid together over the last 12 months and I’m delighted to be given the news that we can now continue providing a valuable service benefitting 285 families and recruiting and training an additional 180 local parental volunteers over the next 5 years!”  commented Kathryn Eckersley the Scheme Manager.

The STEPS project will help address the needs of ‘forgotten families’ of Salford and Trafford, who have children under five years old. We feel that they are being forgotten because they often don’t quite meet the thresholds or have the wrong postcode to be eligible for other forms of support due to ongoing budget cuts, but they still suffer from social isolation, poor mental health, post-natal depression, lack of self esteem, disabilities, bereavement, poor health, poor parenting skills and are increasingly affected by poverty and debt.

Our unique network of local parental volunteers help prevent ‘forgotten families’ reaching crisis, aiming to give every child the best possible start in life. Befriending and visiting families weekly in their own homes strengthens and enables them to cope and improve their parenting skills, to be better able to deal with the challenging issues with which they are faced.

Home-Start Trafford and Home-Start Salford both originally ran as two separate schemes and have been supporting families since 1999. Home-Start Salford faced closure when the local authority stopped funding them, so in order to keep the much needed service in existence in the Salford area the two schemes merged in January 2012.  The STEPS project will cover both Trafford and Salford areas, which is a delight to the scheme manager who is a passionate Salfordian who believes the need in Salford is enormous!

Stephen Secretan, the Chair of HSTS Board of Trustees said, “This is wonderful news for us and for families we support across Salford and Trafford. Families tell us all the time that the support they get from Home-Start makes a real difference to their lives. And this new funding from the Big Lottery will allow us to make that positive difference to many more young families that are living in difficult circumstances”

We already have a fantastic team of 94 home-visiting volunteers but we are regularly recruiting more, we have a volunteer preparation course starting January 2014, If you are a local parent and have a few hours a week to spare please contact us to find out more 0161 865 4222.

We are delighted that the Brian Kennedy Trust are keen to develop a partnership with Home-Start Trafford & Salford. The kind and generous offer to help provide much needed items to some of the most vulnerable  families we come into contact with is life changing. Their friendly and sensitive approach alongside listening to and understanding the individual unique needs and multiple challenges the families face  is amazing. Thank you
